Africa by Bike - about the expedition

Distance Cycled : 29,169km

Hello and welcome to Africa By Bike!  This website is here to tell you about our cycling expedition of almost 30,000 kilometres through Africa to Cape Town.  The "journey of a lifetime", passing through some of the world's most geographically and culturally spectacular regions, came to an end in Cape Town in April 2006.  We enjoyed our trip immensely and are grateful to everyone who helped us in our efforts to support the work of Link Community Development - we raised over £5,000 in sponsorship through our journey and although our Justgiving page is now closed, you can of course still donate directly to Link .

Throughout the expedition, we tried to promote cycling both as a sport and as a means of travel - which is exactly what it is in many of the countries we visited.  As well as being a healthy, exciting and environmentally-sound way to travel, the pace of cycling allowed us to gain a privileged insight into the lives of Africans, and to appreciate the sheer beauty and variety of the continent.  We hope that our mode of travel also helped to minimise the adverse cultural impact of our own trip and encouraged others to think carefully about how tourism affects communities.

Some tips to help you find your way through the site.  The menu on the right hand side of every page contains links to all the major sections, with the section you´re in at the moment highlighted in orange.  Other pages have back and forward buttons so you can scroll through several pages, e.g. in updates.  Wherever you see a photo or map as a thumbnail (small image), clicking on it will bring up a bigger version.

Why not read one of our updates from the road - there are over thirty to choose from; find out how you can help Link; use the links on the right to browse the site; or email us for more information.  We are more than happy to answer any queries fellow cyclists or anyone planning a trip to Africa might have.

Latest News

Drover Holidays May 29th 2007 - Hay on Wye, Wales  One year on!  We are now settled in Wales, and in case you are wondering whether we now have 'sensible' jobs, the answer is probably no!  Two months ago we started our own business, offering walking and cycling tours of Wales, and you can read all about it here

May 21st 2006 - Thorne, South Yorkshire  Well, it's almost six weeks since we flew home from Cape Town and we're slowly readjusting to life in the UK...  We've kept ourselves pretty busy looking for a place to live (probably in South Wales) and jobs - Anna is working already and Luke is finalising a new job in the travel industry.  We've spent lots of time thinking about the book, as well, although we haven't actually started writing yet!

April 7th - Cape Town!  It feels quite surreal to have actually made it - it's slowly sinking in that the cycling is over for now...  We had quite a welcome waiting for us and did interviews for Die Burger and the Weekend Argus newspapers before enjoying a fantastic dinner with Luke's parents on the Waterfront and a very comfortable night in our plush room here at the Cape Grace.  The breakfast spread was something to behold as well - we're now virtually unable to move so are making the most of the internet cafe here before exploring Cape Town later today.  We're working on the final update so that will be online later

April 3rd - Cape Town is getting closer...  We're in Swellendam, the third oldest European settlement in South Africa, about 100km north of the southermost tip of the continent.  Tomorrow we'll visit Agulhas itself, and then it's on to the grand finale - the Cape Grace Hotel are kindly looking after us in Cape Town so we're quite excited about ending in style...

March 26th - it's only been 18 days since the last update in Palapye, but it feels like a lot more - and we've covered 1800km, so there's plenty to say.  It's all in the usual place - see update 34.

Watch out for Warthogs March 12th - South Africa at last!  Crossing the border from Botswana felt like a momentous occasion, and since then we've made good progress southwards to Rustenburg, 100km or so west of Johannesburg.

March 8th - the last stretch has been a long, and in places very hard one.  Between Kazungula and Palapye, we've encountered elephants, ferocious headwinds, the worst rain for ages, and broken our distance record twice.  You can read all about it as usual in the update!
